And then Amy, in the middle of the airport, screamed, “Fuck you, you fuckin’ dick, you fuckin’ rich asshole.” And it was so satisfying—it was immediate release.

TINA FEY: We went to Toronto one time on this flight— we were making Mean Girls— and me and Ana Gastayer and Amy Poehler were all on this flight and we got off and this businessman just like, pushed passed Amy and she was just like “Hey, what’s up? You should say you’re sorry.” And he was like, “You should say you’re sorry for being in my way,” being really rude to her. And I saw her little Irish brain snap, and she just like looked up and she took this breath and she was just like— well, yeah. She just unleashed on this guy, and the dude literally ran away. He was like a 50-year old businessman and he ran away.

Book Review: Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer

Rating: 5/5

Required reading, for, well, everybody, in my opinion. Under the Banner of Heaven is an exhaustive, thought-provoking and infuriating work of religious nonfiction that never even borders on boring or tedious. I mean, to be fair, Mormonism is like, probably the most interesting topic I can think of. But John Krakauer’s examination of a prominent fundamentalist-driven murder in the 1980s, framed by the endlessly fascinating history of bizarro Latter-Day Saints, is really exceptional.

I imagine that it’s pretty hard to come away from the book with a positive feeling about the religion (or religion, period). And of course, most Mormons are lovely people who have never murdered anyone or tried to marry their daughters or whatever. But it’s not doing these people a service to ignore the rich history of dynamic leadership, abuse and weirdness that preceded them. As Krakauer states in “The Appendix to the Anchor Edition” at the close of the book, “illuminating unpleasant historical truths is not the same thing as bigotry.” This Appendix, by the way, was AWESOME — essentially a line-by-line “bitch, no you DIDN’T” to the Mormon establishment’s critical arguments of his work upon its publication.

This is really just a great example of how to explore facts and come to thoughtful conclusions like an eyes-wide-open adult. I recommend to EVERYBODY!

Book Review: Stone Arabia by Dana Spiotta

Rating: 4/5

Stone Arabia is great— if you’re into depressing tales of weird brother-sister relationships, pointless and debilitating obsession and general life disappointment — WHICH I TOTALLY AM! I really liked this story of siblings growing up in dirty Hollywood in the 1970s, then trying to navigate their sad and lonely adult lives. I was also really engaged by the brother’s lifelong preoccupation with documenting his “music career,” which mostly consisted of recording dozens of full albums for a small handful of friends and family, including cover art and liner notes, then whipping up a slew of reviews by fake music journalists.

Anyone who is fascinated by fringe artists like Daniel Johnston or that crazy janitor from In the Realms of the Unreal will like Stone Arabia, another fascinating look at the loneliness of obsession:

“(Ask someone who is truly obsessed why they feel that way. They will sputter, they will feel you are interrogating their private world, they may spout a list of reasons, but ultimately they can’t fully explain it. Obsession has an irrational or subrational heart. It’s a bit like falling in love, I imagine.) And I believe few things are as despicable and dishonest as faking an obsession. The world is full of the lightly obsessed, the faintly committed, the inch-deep dilettantes. All those contrived and affected and presented passions.”

Book Review: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

Rating: 3/5

So after reading this, I was not too jazzed about it. The “I can taste feelings” and “I’m emotionally starving” symbolism was a little too on the nose for me, and there were times when I felt like the story meandered and lost its focus. However, I had the opportunity to hear Aimee Bender talk about the book, and it honestly gave me a better appreciation for it. She certainly found a super creative way to explore emotional turmoil of the ultra-aware: it’s like Ruth Reichl and Alice Miller co-wrote the story of Rogue from X-Men. Pretty interesting.
